The 10-minute WordPress SEO checklist

You do not need a month to improve your SEO. These ten fixes cover most of what holds small sites back.

1. Make sure search engines can see you

In Settings → Reading, confirm that “Discourage search engines” is off. It is the most common reason a new site is invisible.

2. Use clean permalinks

Choose a post-name structure so addresses read like /seo-checklist/ instead of ?p=123.

3. Give every page a unique title

Aim for 30 to 60 characters with the main topic near the front.

4. Write meta descriptions that earn the click

About 120 to 160 characters, written for a person, ending with a reason to visit.

5. Use one H1 per page

Your theme usually prints the title as the H1. Use H2 and H3 inside the content.

6. Add alt text to images

Describe what the image shows in a short phrase. It helps accessibility and image search.

7. Link your pages together

Every page should be reachable from at least one other page.

8. Publish an XML sitemap

It tells search engines which pages exist and when they changed.

9. Fix broken links and redirect moved pages

A 301 redirect keeps visitors and ranking signals when an address changes.

10. Re-check monthly

SEO drifts as you publish. A monthly audit email keeps you honest.
