What schema markup is

Schema markup is a small block of structured data, written as JSON-LD, that tells search engines exactly what a page is: an article, a product, a recipe, an event, a business. It does not change how the page looks to visitors. It can change how your page looks in search results, with rich results such as star ratings, FAQ dropdowns, event dates and breadcrumb trails.

How to use the generator

  1. Pick the type that matches your page.
  2. Fill in the fields. Required fields are marked and the tool warns you if one is missing.
  3. Copy the generated code.
  4. Paste it into the head of your page, or into a custom HTML block, an SEO plugin field or Google Tag Manager.
  5. Test the page with the Schema checker on this site, or Google’s Rich Results Test.

Which schema types should you add?

  • Organization on your homepage, to describe your brand, logo and social profiles.
  • Article on blog posts and news.
  • Product on product pages, with price, availability and rating.
  • LocalBusiness if customers find you by location.
  • FAQPage where a page genuinely answers common questions.
  • BreadcrumbList to show your site structure in results.

Rules to follow

Only mark up content that is visible on the page. Keep the data accurate and up to date, and never mark up reviews you wrote yourself. Search engines can issue a manual action for misleading markup.
